C&W's Bulldog Exits Home Broadband Market

Bulldog Communications has announced that its eight megabyte broadband service is being made available to one third of the UK's homes.

It is intended that, by the end of this calendar year (2006), Cable & Wireless will use this local loop capability for corporate customer access, in addition to the wholesale offer provided.

Following the acquisition of Toucan and Bulldog, Pipex now has 1.14 million broadband and home phone customers, of which over 570, 000 have broadband. The move will also strengthen Pipexa s position in a crowded market place as it will now be able to offer triple play; a bundled package offering home phone, broadband and mobile. Peter Dubens, Pipexa s chairman, "This acquisition will enable Pipex to provide triple play in the UK market by the end of 2007. Broadband, voice and mobile will be bundled and offered to our entire base in the coming months."

Laptop Computer Cable & Wireless expects limited benefits from the move to wholesale during 2006/07 as Bulldog completes the local loop roll out and invests in wholesaling capability. Specific guidance will be provided at the interim results on 8 November 2006.

Desktop Computer In statement released Thursday, John Pluthero, Group Managing Director, UK said, "As the market leader in full local loop unbundling, we have been looking at the best way to maximise the return on our investment. We believe that a wholesaling approach to the consumer and SME market is the best way to optimise our return from our unique local loop network capability."

Notebooks Shares of Cable & Wireless closed up 50 pence at 106.50p on the London Stock Exchange Thursday.
