Simultaneous to that news, Wi-Lan said its CEO Bill Dunbar was leaving the company but gave no indication as to why Dunbar was giving up his post.

Katz runs the company with 22 paid employees and 300 volunteers who give technical support to new users and are compensated with free memberships (remember those days at AOL ). He rents space in two AT&T data centers, one in Manhattan, another inSecaucus, N.J., with $700, 000 worth of computer equipment, end servers from Dell Computer and five IBM Unix servers. The $2 million annual payroll is his biggest expense.

Microsoft Investors panicked over the news, sending Wi-Lan shares plummeting over 9.5%, down 7 cents at $0.66 in late afternoon trading Wednesday.

Laptop Computers "Bill Dunbar stepped in to provide the leadership required at a difficult time as Wi-LAN reorganizes to focus on its core strengths," said Bill Hews, chairman, Wi-LAN Inc. "This executive search engagement implements a succession plan that supports the new needs of the company as it goes forward."

"Computer industry analysts estimate that some 60 percent of all corporate data exists only on desktop and laptop computers, " said Walter Scott, CEO of Acronis. "Incorporating Acronis True Image with New Mexico Software backup server is the ideal solution to capture that corporate data and ensure that it is not lost. While traditional server backups are effective for protecting server data, every company should have a combination of server and workstation backup plans."

Laptop Computer Hews comments were not enough to stop the broadband wireless service provider's investors from bailing out of the stock.

And then, of course, we have the Standalone Server product, which is called Acronis True Image Server for Windows or Linux and that will manage a single standalone server. What type of computers can we back up, because in a medium to a large sized, even some small sized businesses, who knows what kind of computers they have They may have laptops, they may have desktops, they may just have anything and everything

Desktop Computer Wi-Lan said its phased exit from the equipment business will be complete by the end of its second quarter, on April 30, 2006, and will reduce its work force by about 50 positions.

Notebooks The company said it is also seeking partners interested in buying one or more of its commercial broadband wireless access product lines.

Lenovo Wi-Lan said the equipment business is unprofitable and it was unable to meet development and working capital costs of the product lines while growing its intellectual property business.

Hard Drive Wi-Lan also said it was relocating its head office to a smaller and cheaper location in Calgary, Alberta.

Travelstar Dunbar joined Wi-Lan in February, 2005 to focus the company on its intellectual property business, now that it is moving in that direction, Dunbar's exit remains a mystery, Hews' comments about shedding other business and relocating to cheaper offices suggests Wi-Lan may be in trouble.
