The history of music and computers is a surprisingly long one, dating back to the 1950's. RCA (Radio Corporation of America) introduced the first synthesizer, developed to study the nature of music. This idea led to the creation of MIDI format in 1981 which was a common format for 'computer music' throughout the 1980's and 1990's. Computers and music really got into a high gear in the 1990's, with many advancements being made including:
1991: The Sony MD, or mini disc, is introduced; like a 3 1/2-inch computer floppy disk, it comes packaged in its own protective caddy. Also the MP3 format is developed by the German research firm Fraunhofer Institute that allows people to download digital-quality music from the Internet, bypassing usual music outlets.
1995: Real Audio Player is released from Progressive Networks, which was the first graphical interface audio player with the specific intent of downloading music from the web
1998: The first portable MP3 player the RIO PMP 3000 becomes available, made by Diamond Mulimedia.
MP3 is now the defacto standard for music on the internet, and has caused many executives of large music corporations sleepless nights over revenue lost by people downloading music illegally from the web!
MP3 is short for Moving Picture Experts Group, Audio Layer III, and is a compression format that shrinks audio files with only a small sacrifice in sound quality. MP3 files can be compressed at different rates, but the more they are compressed, the worse the sound quality. A standard MP3 compression is at a 10:1 ratio, and creates a file that is about 4 MB for a three-minute track.
However, for MP3 to become the universal music format on the internet that it is today, it needed a good application program to play them, and one that was easy to use to boot. In 1997, two university students took an existing unwieldy MP3 software player and grafted on a windows interface, giving birth to Win AMP which is now found of PC's around the world, as it was offered as 'freeware' in 1998 and rapidly became accepted by internet music enthusiasts as a way of sharing music around the world for free.
Before long, other programmers jumped in to create a whole toolset for MP3 junkies. New encoders, rippers, and players were sprouting up every week, and the movement was growing strong. Search engines made it even easier to find the specific MP3 files people wanted and portable players like the Rio let them take MP3 tracks on the road. Now portable MP3 players are very cheap, and have an amazing capacity, allowing anyone to take their favorite music with them wherever they go!
