'Safe Corridors' Plan Hits Full Speed

Thinkpad The measure was approved by the state Senate after a 32-0 vote Monday.

Software Fines collected under the measure will go toward establishing a "Highway Safety Fund" that will help pay for safety programs and patrols by State Police and municipal police departments, state officials said.

Hard Drives The state, under the bill, is able to repeal the Safe Corridors only after studies show decreases in crashes and deaths.

Electronics In 2002, more than 700 people died on state roads. State officials said the measure is in no way meant to punish drivers, but is rather a way to raise the stakes for those who put others in danger.

Canon The bill that cleared the Senate Monday will head back to the Assembly with two amendments. One added change is to double fines, not quadruple fines as the Assembly had wanted, a state official said.
