IDG Publications Win an Overwhelming 116 Awards from ASBPE in
2004
Computerworld and CSO Named Magazines of the Year; IDG Founder
Patrick J. McGovern Recognized with Lifetime Achievement Award
Laptop Battery BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 21, 2004--With 116 wins, IDG
publications dominated the largest annual editorial and design
competition among business publications sponsored by the American
Society of Business Publications Editors (ASBPE). IDG publications
received "Magazine of the Year" in both circulation categories and
an additional 51 national awards at the ASBPE's national conference
in Philadelphia. Earlier in the spring, IDG publications also won
63 regional awards in both the Northeastern and Western ASBPE
regions.
IDG's Computerworld and CSO magazine were named the large and
small circulation 2004 "Magazines of the Year." ASBPE judges called
Computerworld a "cutting edge" magazine with great design and
typography and called CSO, "a strong voice for
people who have challenging jobs."
In the 80,000 or more circulation category, IDG's CIO magazine
received an honorable mention for "Magazine of the Year" and PC
World was named as one of the "Top 10 Magazines of the Year."

Patrick J. McGovern was honored with the organization's "Lifetime
Achievement Award." When citing his many accomplishments, ASBPE

Hard Drive Computerworld, named "Magazine of the Year," also won 13
national awards - the most awards of all publications under
consideration. With three gold, five silver and five bronze awards,
Computerworld was positioned as the top IT weekly in the ASBPE's
national awards program, nearly doubling the awards of its closest
competitor. This honor comes on the heels of winning four gold,
four silver and two bronze awards at the Northeastern Regional
ASBPE ceremony last month, bringing Computerworld's total to 23
ASBPE awards for excellence this year. Judges honored Computerworld
for excellence in a variety of award categories, including feature
articles, print news sections,

Gateway In addition to "Magazine of the Year," CSO took home nine awards
(five golds, two silver and two bronze awards) for excellence in
categories including how-to, contributed columns, special sections,
contents page, front cover photography, typography, Web
site/interactive community and individual profiles. These honors
come on the heels of seven gold, two silver and one bronze for CSO
at the ASBPE Northeastern Regional awards.
Laptop Parts CIO
Software With an honorable mention for "Magazine of the Year," CIO also
won six national awards (three golds, two silver and one bronze) in
categories such as how-to, individual profiles, technical articles,
special sections and case history. These honors follow four gold,
four silver and two bronze awards for CIO at the ASBPE Northeastern
Regional awards.
Hard Drives CIO's award-winning year began in March with receipt of the
coveted Grand Neal, presented at the Jesse H. Neal National
Business Journalism Awards ceremony, to the publication that best
exemplifies editorial excellence in the business press. Recently,
CIO magazine Editor-in-Chief Abbie Lundberg was named "Top Editor"
in the large publications category by BtoB's Media Business
magazine.
Electronics PC World
Canon PC World's nine national ASBPE awards - three gold, four silver
and two bronze - are acknowledgement of PC World's print and online
accomplishments in all departments, including features, reviews,
news, design and the Test Center. Signature pieces singled-out by
the ASBPE were "Dawn of the Superworm" and "Are You Helping a
Spammer" which represent PC World's commitment to keeping the
public informed about Internet threats. In addition to the national
awards, PC World received Western Regional accolades in 15
categories, including 10 gold for regular departments, columns,
article series, illustrations and graphics and special sections.
The Top 100, Consumer Watch and the 20th Anniversary issue (March
2003) were among the gold award winners.
Desktop Pc Bio-IT World and
Health-IT World
Desktop Computers IDG's Bio-IT World was honored with four national and five
regional awards from the ASBPE for publications with less than
80,000 circulation. The magazine's front cover, opening page or
spread, Health-IT World newsletter and feature series "Resolving
Bottlenecks" were among the national and regional gold award
winners.
Think Pad InfoWorld
Repair InfoWorld received four national and five regional awards from
the ASBPE. InfoWorld was honored with a gold award in online
excellence for "Original Web News Section," a silver award for
"Overall Web Publication," a silver award in graphics excellence
for the front cover illustration and a bronze award for "Graphics
Excellence in Publication Redesign." In the Western Region,
InfoWorld took home four gold awards for its front covers (computer
generated and illustration), news section and publication redesign.
It also won a silver editorial award for "Best Feature Article" for
"Spam Shootout."
Data Recovery Network World
Cisco IDG's Network World received two national awards from the ASBPE.
The special supplement "The Federal Agenda: Top Priorities" and the
technical article "Spam in the Wild" were both bronze award
winners. These articles also won gold and bronze awards,
respectively, in the Northeastern Region.
Keyboard Macworld
Monitor A national bronze award was given to Macworld in the design
category "Contents Page or Pages." Winning a total of six awards in
the Western Region, Macworld's ASBPE honors included two gold
awards for graphic excellence for its contents page and front cover
photo. Macworld also won three silver awards; two were for graphic
excellence for the front cover and opening page or spread and one
was for editorial excellence for the special supplement "Digital
Hub." Additionally, the magazine won a bronze award for editorial
excellence in the news article category.
