Why we chose it: Traditionally, you wouldnt expect to see a Resident Evil game winning an action award. Why not? Well, the series has in the past featured more slow-paced, cheap-scare-based gameplay that was never really action-packed. However, when Capcom re-worked its franchise early in 2005 with Resident Evil 4, it ditched the slower gameplay that had made the series so famous for non-stop action that blurs together fighting hordes of enemies, hellish bosses and other run-and-gun action. The change in pace is appreciated, though, because Resident Evil 4 is still every bit as immersive as its siblings, maybe even more so. Tons of weapons keep progression smooth and compelling. Moreover, tons of enemies and boss battles give you plenty to shoot at. This is without a doubt our favorite action game of 2005. No contest.
