I needed to protect the PHP source code of some projects of mine, and I had just started devising a simple PHP encryption scheme when I was contacted by Zend Technologies and asked to beta-test their Zend Guard, which claimed to provide a much higher protection level.I tested v4.0.2 against two medium-scale projects (for a grand total of ~100 .php files and ~200kB of code), and had no problem whatsoever, either at compile-time or at run-time. Compilation is an extremely smooth process which lends itself to being automated very well, e.g. by a shell script, and indeed leaves no apparent trace of the original text in the compiled files.
