New viruses are being found "in the wild" all the
time. Further, the speed at which these new viruses spread is
increasing all the time. A key problem is not that antivirus
programs do not detect such viruses, but the fact that most
users do not use any antivirus program at all or, perhaps
worse, the antivirus software and / or virus definitions
database is out of date. laptop computers
ALWIL Software, the producer of avast!, decided in June 2001
to help to solve this situation by offering avast! Home Edition
free of charge for home users who do not use their computer for
profit. To get industry leading antivirus protection for your
home PC, download the software, and then register it.

: Topic: Working with Pictures/photos Post a
Topic Posted by: Brenda C. 20 Jul @ 12:27 Working with
Pictures/photos I recently had problems with my computer and
whilst solving the problem I had to lose everything off my
system - (I received advice from The Tech Guys). I therefore
re-installed all the main programmes, i.e. Microsoft Office,
Norton, Broadband etc. As I had got all my photos, files etc on
a back-up disc I put these all back on from the disc. cognos
I managed to delete the files I did not require such as
e-mails, letters etc so I am now left with all my photos.
However, I have got several files/folders with all these in and
I can only view them by opening each photo with Internet
Explorer which takes ages! (Thes are all in
"Pictures". In the Windows Photo Gallery, all the
folders are displayed but I have been unable to open them. I am
wondering if anyone can advise me what I have done wrong or how
I can solve the problem. hosting
Many thanks for any assistance you can give me. Brenda Cork

Pictures/photos sounds like you've not got round to
installing any image-editing software. Typically these come
bundled with printers, scanners and even some versions of
Nero/Roxio CD burning software. If you want something free,
which works well, download and install "paintdotnet"
from this link: netfinity
http://www.dotpdn.com/files/Paint.NET.3.35.zip Also
"Irfanview" is a good free image viewer with a degree
of photoediting available: download from

IT Professional 20 Jul @ 13:00 and just an add-on: it may be
that you do have photo software on the machine, and simply that
the file defaults have been changed if you use a right mouse
click on one of the pictures in Windows Explorer, do you get a
menu which includes "open with" If not, try right
clicking while holding the "shift" key down. Once you
get the "open with", LEFT click that and you should
get a choice of programs. Try using one of these. If you want
to make the chance permanent, select "chhose
program", select the program and then tick "always
use this program..." cheap computer

I hear a lot from people who say they took their computer to
"The Tech Guys" and they reset the computer to its
factory settings so everything was lost. This really should be
the very very last resort and I am pleased to say I have only
had to do this once in the last 12 months (actually on a PC
running Vista because Vista has no equivalent to an XP Repair
Re-install). I'm glad you had a back-up of all your files.
If you come to PCIQ next time you have a problem, I think you
will find a Computer Professional who tries a bit harder! printer
Posted by: Jon W. 21 Jul @ 01:47 Seems like you have the
pictures to open with "internet explorer" for some
reason. Right click the pictures ie .gif / .jpg and then click
"properties" then you will see another box. Below the
title of the picture there will be a text line "Type of
file: JPEG" and then below that line it will say
"Opens with" click the "change" button and
choose "Windows picture and fax viewer" and tick the
"always use this to open this type of file" then
click ok. Hope it helps xseries
Posted by: Brenda C. 21 Jul @ 09:35 Thanks for the e-mail
from "IT Proffessional" dated 20 July at 18.o5. I
note what you say about The Tech Guys - I had the advice from
them over the phone but I am still having problems getting my
pictures to work so I will think twice next time before asking
them for advice! I appreciate all the response I have received

"Alan B" and I note that I do not have to Register in
order to be able to use this site. (I think now that you only
have to Log-in if you are an PCIQ IT Professional!). Whilst on
this site out the problem which I had with managed to sort out
the problem which I had with opening and saving my Pictures. I
managed to do this in the end by naming each one and then using
the "save as" feature. I could then open a new folder
and drag each photo into the relevant folder. Sounds
complicated but it was easy really!!! Many thanks for all the
replies to my query anyway! Brenda C. hitachi

Microsoft, BBC etc) the chances are that it is a virus in
