Microsoft As an NJMC member community, Kearny's eligibility to receive assistance from the commission weighed heavily in the DCA's decision to deny the town's aid request, according to DCA spokeswoman Jennifer Monaghan. The DCA and NJMC are linked through their mutual commissioner, Susan Bass Levin.

Laptop Computer The DCA awarded a total of $35 million in extraordinary aid to 29 New Jersey communities, including three in Hudson County - Bayonne, which got $900,000; Guttenberg, $300,000; and Weehawken, $750,000.
"Computer industry analysts estimate that some 60 percent of all corporate data exists only on desktop and laptop computers, " said Walter Scott, CEO of Acronis. Desktop Computer Kearny's bailout came through a resolution adopted on Oct. 23 by NJMC commissioners to purchase 47.3 acres of town-owned wetlands for $236,600. The commission also has the option to buy an additional 24.8 acres of wetlands from Kearny for $123,900.
Notebooks In total, Kearny expects to apply $360,500 from the two marshland sales to its municipal budget, which took effect July 1.
Lenovo The purchases are part of an ongoing effort by the NJMC to preserve wetlands and create a Meadowlands preserve. The marshland purchased in Kearny functions as a winter feeding ground for several species of waterfowl.
Hard Drive Last year, Kearny received $500,000 in extraordinary aid from the state. The town also reaped $428,000 from the NJMC through an agreement to sell marshland in the South Kearny meadows to the commission.
Travelstar Nearby Lyndhurst, another NJMC member community, received $200,000 in extraordinary aid from the state this year, in addition to $485,300 for the sale of 97.06 acres of wetlands. That sale was also approved by NJMC commissioners last Thursday.
Gateway This year, Lyndhurst has $1.6 million of "unique circumstances" in its budget, and the Bergen County municipality received no extraordinary aid last year, two key factors in the state's decision to issue the dual awards, according to Monaghan.
Laptop Parts Kearny Mayor Al Santos said the town is also negotiating with the NJMC through the DCA for another potential aid package to reimburse costs for repairs to pump stations and sewer line expenses in South Kearny. A final figure for that aid package, which is expected to be reviewed by the NJMC at its November meeting, has not been settled.
Software Another piece of Kearny's budget puzzle fell into place earlier last week, when the town discovered it was eligible to receive $479,000 from the state Environmental Infrastructure Trust Fund for reimbursement of design and engineering expenses for ongoing sewer separation work.
Hard Drives Despite the cash infusion into this year's budget from the NJMC, Santos expressed frustration that the town could be penalized for finishing the 2003 budget year, which ended June 30, with a $4.1 million surplus.
Electronics "I want to make sure the town doesn't get penalized for the good job we did last year," he said.
Canon The negotiations with the NJMC are delaying the town's efforts to finalize the budget and strike a tax rate for the third and fourth quarters of the budget year.
