REAL Software Gives a Home to 'Stranded' Visual Basic Users, Offers Free Licenses for REALbasic for Windows

AUSTIN, Texas, March 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Given Microsoft's widely publicized plans to end support for Visual Basic 6 at the end of this month (http://msdn.microsoft.com/vbasic/support/vb6.aspx), REAL Software announced today it is giving Visual Basic users a new home -- REALbasic. From now through March 31, 2005, Visual Basic users can get REALbasic 5.5 for Windows Standard Edition, completely free of charge.
"Visual Basic users are feeling abandoned right now," stated Geoff Perlman, president and CEO of REAL Software. "They've invested a lot of time and energy into learning Visual Basic. We want them to know that they can leverage those hard-earned skills long into the future with REALbasic. We are simply offering these stranded Visual Basic users the opportunity to join the large, vibrant and growing REALbasic community-for free."

Visual Basic users who try REALbasic find they are quickly productive as they discover the language and environment are very similar. To smooth the process, REALbasic includes a utility that helps convert existing Visual Basic projects to REALbasic. An added benefit on Windows, REALbasic creates self-contained executables that eliminate the need for DLLs or external frameworks, so software created with REALbasic avoids "DLL hell."

Visual Basic users also get a bonus that is unique to REALbasic. Once Visual Basic projects are converted to REALbasic, they can be cross-compiled to run on Linux and Macintosh also. This enables Visual Basic users to leverage their existing skills to develop software for any of the major desktop platforms.

"I've used Visual Basic for many years, and since I knew Microsoft was discontinuing support for Visual Basic, I was looking for alternatives when I discovered REALbasic," stated Hank Marquis, chief technology officer of Slayfire Software (http://www.slayfire.com/) and a longtime Visual Basic user, author and expert. "I can say from my own experience that REALbasic is a great next step for Visual Basic 6 users, and a step that leads them to new platforms as well."

This special offer from REAL Software is good through March 31, 2005. Visual Basic users can get more information and REALbasic 5.5. Standard Edition for Windows for free, by visiting http://www.realbasic.com/vb6 .
