Lenovo During a long career at the New York City Department of Transportation's repair and maintenance shop in Corona, Queens, Mr. Ford used his invention to successfully diagnose engine troubles with the fleet, according to Donald Bellamy, formerly an assistant director of the shop but now retired.
Hard Drive But even after decades of perfecting the device, Mr. Ford has not yet been able to commercialize it. In the 1990's, he said, he was cheated of more than $15,000 by a company that promised to help him with his machine. "That company really took him for a ride," said Avis Privott Yeiser, who has known Mr. Ford since she was in high school a couple of decades ago, when Mr. Ford was dating her mother.
Travelstar Mr. Ford and her mother have long parted ways. But Mrs. Yeiser and Mr. Ford, who helped finance her undergraduate degree at Buffalo State University, have remained close. Now, Mr. Ford has enlisted Mrs. Yeiser, who teaches design technology at Commerce Middle School in Yonkers, and her husband, Jerome Yeiser, to help bring the invention to market.
Gateway Mr. Ford says his invention basically takes the place of an experienced mechanic, who can guess by simply touching a radiator hose, for example, whether the temperature and pressure of the coolant is correct. This is a time-consuming process, he said, and less experienced mechanics tend to misdiagnose problems and thus do unnecessary repairs or replace perfectly good parts.

Software Mr. Yeiser, who is acting as president of Kool Chek, a company Mr. Ford founded to promote the device, said he was perplexed that automakers had been slow to express interest. Nothing similar is available, Mr. Yeiser said. "I guess corporate America is not too keen on having an old guy in Brooklyn take credit for this," he said.
Hard Drives But Mr. Ford says he does not take the rejection personally. "All big companies have a not-invented-here attitude," he said. "Eventually, they'll come around."
