Three Faculty Publish New Books
Date 3/13/1997 12:00 AM | Topic: NewsThe writings of three Luther faculty members have recently been published and are available in the Luther Bookshop. In addition, Bishop H. George Anderson's new book, "A Good Time to be the Church," is now available.
Kathleen Stokker, professor of Norwegian, recently published "Folklore Fights the Nazis, Humor in Occupied Norway" in its second edition. The book tells about daily life in Norway during the Nazi occupation through the jokes and humor that circulated among the people.
Stokker said she got the idea for the book while on sabbatical, teaching at the University of California at Berkeley. She conducted research in Oslo at a museum dedicated to the resistance against the Nazis. Stokker found many satirical cartoons in the resistance newspapers, but it wasn't until her second to last day there that she found a joke notebook. The next day she gave an interview in which she mentioned the joke book and four other women told Stokker that they too had kept joke notebooks during the occupation. These five notebooks became the basis for Stokker's book.
Stokker will be traveling to Washington DC over spring break to give a presentation on the subject. She has also published a widely-used, first-year Norwegian textbook and a second-year Norwegian anthology text. She is currently working on a book about the Norwegian-American Christmas folklore.
Professor of English Robert Schultz is publishing two books this spring. "The Madhouse Nudes" is a novel written in the form of letters between a Northeast Iowa artist and his friend and agent in New York. The question underlying the novel is, "Can a man look guiltlessly on a woman?" Schultz said he first became interested in the subject of men and women "trying to work their way to some kind of balance and poise" through his poetry.
Schultz's second book, a collection of poems entitled "Winter in Eden," has been chosen as the first in a series of collections of poetry by Iowa poets published by Loess Hill Books. These poems were written over a period of 15 years, with some first published in 1979 as part of Schultz's first collection of poetry in graduate school. The poetry book was actually completed before the novel and was a finalist for the Yale Younger Poet's Prize and the Walt Whitman Academy of America poets award.
Both of Schultz's books will be in the bookshop as early as next week. Schultz will also be giving a reading of selections from both books April 20th.
Professor of Religion Bradley C. Hanson 's book "Introduction to Christian Theology" is also now available in the bookshop. Hanson was out of the country at press time and therefore unavailable for an interview.
