Xseries April 10, 2003 (AXcess News) Houston TX - Recently our publication has been covering Boots & Coots (AMEX:
Maxtor href="http://studio.financialcontent.com/Engine?Account=axcess&Ticker=wel&PageName=QUOTE">WEL ). Boy, I can only say I'm glad I wasn't assigned that one! There was more shrap metal flying around the office from incoming email's than in the deserts of Iraq. It was great reading too! Some of it praised our journalism, we thank you for that. But some of it was down right threatening and scary!
Data Storage The boots & Coots story was steeped in mistry and entrigue. The kind of story reporters love. Here was a business that ran hot and cold. So did its stock! Which is why we covered it in the first place! But this week's column isn't about hashing over Boots & Coots. Its about the internet and how media has sort of stumbled onto a new plaine of communication. The war in Iraq is a good basis for this. There were "virtual" reporters sent to cover the war via the Internet. That is a first!
Hitachi href="mailto:steve@poynter.org" target=_new>Steve Outing , Senior editor with the Poynter Institute, wrote that one reporter from the BBC, Stuart Hughes, lost his foot and part of a leg when he stepped on a land mine. His camera man, Kaveh Golestan, was killed. Hughes is writing a blog about his experience in Irag and not as part of the BBC, it's his personally. He had stopped writing while in the hospital but apparently he's back at it again! I looked at Hughe's blog and found it had teeth!
Rational According to a
Websphere href="http://www.cyberjournalist.net/news/000071.php" target=_new>story on cyberjournalist.net even AOL is getting in on the Iraqi net thing by posting letters and photos AOL users are uploading, but its only available to AOL members. Figures, they would try to figure a way to get you to subscribe. But for families that want to communicate and share their love and concern, AOL's offer has teeth!
Battery Poynter's Robin Sloan is tracking the locations of embedded and other journalists as they cover the war.
It Support href="http://www.poynter.org/content/content_view.asp?id=27071&sid=26" target=_new>Full story > [The Internet has brought journalism into a whole new perspective of content delivery and crossed the boarders of professional writing with the advent of blogs. Now anyone can be an online publisher making daily journal entries, adding digital photographs and basically chronicaling those events and making them availble for others to enjoy.]
Western Digital Blogs are also taking the term "networking" to a whole new level.
Music href="http://www.poynter.org/profile/profile.asp?user=1893" target=_new>Amy Gahran wrote "The Japanese blogging trend began with Western ex-pats living there, but now more and more Japanese are publishing their own blogs. Ex-pat Kurt Easterwood's weblog currently lists 115 blogs from Japan ("Other Personal Views from Japan"). "
Networks But going back to Boots and Coots, one alert reader sent us a saluation on our coverage of AMEX: WEL and suggested we check out, "Arms And The Man", a blog devoted entirely to the Boots and Coots chronology that proved to be a very in depth look into that company. In fact, our editor thought the writer of that blog, the mysterious "major barbara", found out more about it than our own reporters! Such as, it was originally a shell merger and a notorious swindler, Reed Slatkin, was in on it (
Toner href="file:///C:/marketaxcess_0410majorbarbara.shtml">Read that excerpt ) - and Vice President Dick Cheney! Now there's a blog with teeth!
