Lap-link n.v. The word is originally the name of a DOS program that transfers files between laptop and desktop computers. It was a nifty program, the brainchild of Mark Eppley, and he formed a company to sell it called Traveling Software in Bothell, WA. Eventually the program became so successful that the word % o LapLink% became a common verb to connote the transferring of files between computers as in, I ll go LapLink this file over to Mary s machine (from Newton% Telecom Dictionary, 1998)

Link to article Laplink has announced it will release a remote support tool for helpdesks that is easier and cheaper than rival products. RemoteAssist, set to ship in early July, enables IT staff to take remote control of a Windows system to fix problems or make changes. It also enables the uploading of files, but does not support chat sessions, unlike tools such as LogMeIn Rescue or GoToAssist. desktop pc

he customers we approached said they didn want all the bells and whistles, just remote control and file transfer. Many of them already run a chat application and didn want a second, commented Laplink chief executive Thomas Koll. desktop computers

Laplink has focused on ease of use with the new tool, so support staff just need to direct a customer to the RemoteAssist client, then generate and send them a password for that session. The client itself is a small executable that can be permanently stored on firms desktops or downloaded on demand. think pad

Because RemoteAssist uses Microsoft RDP protocol, it allows support staff to gain administrator access to a system even across an internet connection, according to Koll. s far as I know, none of the competing remote support tools can do this, he said. repair

RemoteAssist will be available in two versions: the Standard Edition will be hosted from Laplink datacentre and accessed as a service, while an Enterprise Edition is installed on a customer server. The Standard Edition is expected to cost about GBP350 to GBP400 per support technician per year, while perpetual licences for the Enterprise Edition are expected to cost about GBP800 per technician and GBP1, 300 for the server software. data recovery

Listen to audio Emir Aboulhosn, Vice President of Marketing Communications for LapLink, discusses PCmover, an easy to use, wizard driven program that allows you to move all your files, settings, and especially all your applications from one computer to another. Think of PCmover when you are thinking about purchasing a new PC. cisco

O Reilly - Preston Gralla Feb 21, 2006

The new version of Google Desktop includes a potentially useful new feature that lets you search across your computers for files. So if you have a file on one PC, you should be able to find that file from a different one, even if you e halfway across the world. In theory, it sounds great. In practice, it only so-so. First, there are privacy implications, because a partial index of your files lives on Google servers as a kind of way station. While there are plenty of protections against privacy invasions, and the index that is on the server is only a very small slice of your files, you still may not like the idea of any of your index being on a Google server for any amount of time. keyboard

The other problem is that searching across computers doesn work very well. I won go into the dirty details, but you l only be able to search for a very small subset of files on a distant PC. And when you have more than two PCs involved, it becomes nightmarishly complicated. monitor

There is, however, a great solution to the problem. Use LapLink Everywhere along with Google Desktop. It lets you make a secure, remote connection to another of your PCs, and then use Google Desktop to search the whole PC. When you find what you want, you can transfer whatever you find to your local PC. No indexes are stored on Google servers, all your files are indexed, and you can get the files themselves, rather than an indexed image of them. So if you like the idea of Google Desktop, but think that its implementation leaves a lot to be desired, check out LapLink Everywhere. It a keeper. Back to Articles

LapLink Everywhere 4 for Pocket PC, Smartphone and Palm OS review Tools: Email this article | Laplink Everywhere resources

| rss badge Subscribe to our news feed | Please enable javascript to use tools. GeekZone - Editor Apr 29, 2005 I had the chance to try the new LapLink Everywhere version 4 as part of their beta test group. While the main functionality is the PC remote control, I think the software and service show great potential in another area: mobilising personal content. That s why I ll not put much attention to the desktop client for file transfer or remote control, but instead look at this software from the mobile user point of view. lap top

LapLink Everywhere is easy to install and it will run a small client on your computer. This client will securely talk to the LapLink servers using standard secure ports, so it can go through most firewalls (except those that block the specific secure port, of course). When a client (you or me) wants to connect to the remote PC the communication is done through the LapLink server, so that no firewall changes are needed to allow connections to the remote computer. refurbished

The whole thing works really well, with a good user experience. How many times you wanted to send a file to someone, but remembered this file is on your computer at home or office - and you only have your Smartphone or PDA on you Or you are sure you have a specific webpage bookmarked on your home computer memory

In these not so rare occasions a remote control software is perhaps not the best option - in general this approach would go quite fast through the GPRS, CDMA or Wi-Fi data allowance. And here comes this software to help us: LapLink Everywhere 4 acts as a personal server and the content is your own: files, email, contacts, appointments, media, even your web bookmars (on Microsoft Internet Explorer). The most interesting part is how it copes with web-enabled mobile devices. intel

On the remote PC side configuration is very flexible. The software allows one or more accounts to be created, with different access levels. We can then configure our preferred e-mail client (Outlook Express or Outlook) and set some other security options and preferences. as400

When I need to check or go through my content I just go to the LapLink everywhere login page on my Pocket PC or Smartphone and a low bandwidth page (mainly text only) will be presented. After I log in a simple menu will give me different options available. averatec

The e-mail, contacts and calendar entries are retrieved directly from my Outlook profile (in my case I use Exchange Server, and this wasn t a problem). I can add, edit or delete any of these items, and even reply, forward or create new e-mail directly from these web pages. hardware
