Our oceans are deteriorating due to severehabitat destruction and fisheries mismanagement. 90 % of our large ocean going fish have already been decimated and the future of recreational fishing hangs in a precarious balance. But you can make a difference if you take a stand now. Among the recommendations in the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy Report were a series of measures designed to enhance fisheries science and management to ensure the long-term sustainability of marine fish and ocean ecosystems.
The Fisheries Science and Management Enhancement Act of 2005, or H.R. 1431 will save our oceans from mismanagement and implement those recommendations by making the following changes to the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act (MSA): Strengthen the Use of Science in Fisheries Management, Broaden the Representation on Fishery Management Councils and Reduce Conflict of Interest, Train New Council Members, and create a Cooperative Research, Data Collection and Gear Modification Program.
The future of recreational fishing and our oceans depends on people taking a stand and voicing to our representatives that they need to prioritize ocean and fisheries conservation. Whether you live in Florida or just come to visit our beautiful waters, please urge Congresswoman Ros-Lehtinen to be a co-sponsor of the Fisheries Science and Management Enhancement Act of 2005 by contacting her office at Telephone: 202-225-3931, Fax: 202-225-5620 e-mail her at Sarah.perez@mail.house.gov . Lending your voice today can save the oceans for tomorrow.
