Tour's top athletes began competition Friday at Island Lake State
Park in Brighton, Michigan. Friday's first round was comprised of
qualifying in
men's wakeboarding and men's
slalom skiing. All qualifying was done behind MasterCraft's line
of competition
boats powered by Indmar Marine
Engines.
Notebooks In Slalom qualifying, the top run of the day was turned in by
Peter Chase, with 2 buoys @ 39 off. Chase was the only slalom skier
to complete the pass at 38 off. Chris Sullivan finished second in
the qualifying, tied with Harald Hintringer of Austria both at 41/2
@ 38 off.
Lenovo In all, nine skiers found their way into Saturday's Men's Slalom
Semifinals. Those nine skiers will now be tested against the best
slalom skiers in the
world including legend Andy
Mapple who has yet to lose an event in 2001. Mapple has already
won two Pro Tour events, and he hopes to add the Detroit title
to his 2001 season accomplishments. However, Mapple has seen
some competition in recent weeks. Jamie Beauchesne, Chris
Parrish and Jason Paredes have all served notice that Mapple
will not win uncontested.
Hard Drive In wakeboarding qualifying Shane Bonifay, 2001 Vans Triple Crown
of Wakeboarding Ford Ranger Wakeboarding Pro Champion, brought his
game to Island Lake State Park. He participated in qualifying for
the Pro Tour's Wakeboarding Quarterfinals to be held on Saturday.
Bonifay was one of the 17 pro men to advance to the next round,
finishing second in his heat.
Travelstar Just ahead of Bonifay in Heat #2 is Josh Sanders. Sanders
first-place finish in the heat is a flip flop of the Ford Ranger
Pro where Bonifay finished first and Sanders second. Sanders, an
Australian will be joined in the Quarterfinals by fellow countrymen
Greg Falzon and Wayne Mawer. Mawer, the 2001 Asian X Games
Champion, is making his first appearance on the Pro Tour in 2001 at
the Detroit Stop.
Gateway Other pro wakeboarders to win their heats on Friday include Rob
Struharik, who won the fourth and final heat of the day and Trevor
Hansen, a 16 year old phenom from Groveland, Florida. Struharik has
done well over the last month with top five finishes in the Malibu
Open, U.S. Open and Masters. Hansen is in his first year on the Pro
Tour, and making waves for Rookie of the Year Honors.
Laptop Parts Scot Ferwerda and Derek Grasman are both call Michigan home and
tried their hand at Pro Wakeboard Qualifying on Friday.
Unfortunately, both found an early exit to the proceedings, failing
to qualify for Saturday's Quarterfinals.
