Women's golf places 4th in Iowa conference championship
Date 10/7/1999 12:00 AM | Topic: Sports Luther women's golf failed to revenge their runner-up finish in the IIAC Conference Tournament, Oct. 1-2. The Norse captured 4th out of the 10 teams in the two-day tournament held at the Oneota Country Club. The Norse finished behind Simpson, Buena Vista, and Central, respectively.
Leading the Norse, Lynn Hellmark ('00) tied for second in the tournament, but lost in a playoff to place third. Hellmark shot an 84 in both rounds for a score of 168.
Taking individual first place was Hannah Willenborg of conference champs Simpson, shooting a 153, at least 15 strokes ahead of the field. Simpson has won the Conference Championship seven times out of the last eight years.
Hellmark, one of two upperclassmen on the seven member squad, headed the Norse this season with an average score of 83. With the high number of freshman playing varsity, Hellmark expects the team to develop and improve over the next few years.
"We have a lot of potential but a lack of experience," claimed Lutz. "We are a very strong team but definitely have a lot to work on this winter!"
Rounding out Luther's lineup at the tournament were Lutz with a 179, Kristie Lund ('03) (187), Missy Stull ('03) (192), Melissa Walker ('03) (197), and Amanda Benedict ('03) (202).
Next up for the Norse is the Midwest Small College Championship in Pella, Iowa, Oct. 7-8. Hellmark is very excited and expects the women to do very well. This will be the last meet of the fall golf season.
