The long, sad history of the Halper Farm in Piscataway has another dismal chapter. On Monday, the Halper family rejected the state's offer of about $3 million in return for the development rights to 64 of their farm's 75 acres. They called the appraisal "woefully unrealistic and incredibly inadequate" and charged that politicians working against them had manipulated the market.

Microsoft The state's offer was $46,700 per acre for 65 of the family's 75-acre farm or a little more than $3 million, said Linda Bush, principal planner for the Middlesex County Agricultural Development Board.
According to the indictment, Jones would steal various IBM and Penguin computer servers from Verisign's warehouse in Virginia and sell them to Johnson. Johnson would then sell the servers to several individuals, who would sometimes place them for sale on eBay. As a result of this scheme, the indictment alleges that Jones and Johnson caused Verisign to lose more than $120, 000 worth of computer equipment. In the indictment, Jones and Johnson are charged in three counts with causing the interstate transportation of stolen property, namely IBM 330 and 335 servers, in violation of 18 U.S.C.

Notebooks The Halper family operates the Cornell Dairy Farm at Metlars Lane and South Washington Avenue. The business includes a horse riding academy and farm store.
Lenovo In a letter to the state requesting an investigation, the Halpers wrote that they could not trust appraisals from the Middlesex County Agricultural Board because Middlesex County already said it would join with Piscataway to condemn the farm.

The appraisals ... are woefully unrealistic and incredibly inadequate with respect to the value of development rights in the Piscataway real estate market," the Halpers wrote. The family asked the state Agricultural Development Board to hold their application in abeyance while it investigates the case.
Travelstar Hope Gruzlovic, spokeswoman for the state board, says an inquiry is not likely to happen.
Gateway "Landowners were required to submit a bid by noon today and the Halpers did not. They are no longer eligible for this round," Gruzlovic said, adding that there are dissatisfied landowners in every round but offers are based on two appraisals, which are reviewed by the agency.
Laptop Parts Wahler said Piscataway negotiated in good faith and did everything it could to allow the land to be preserved.
Software The Piscataway council began the process to condemn the family farm in 1998, saying they were worried the Halpers would sell their property to a developer who planned to build a hundred homes there.
Hard Drives But, the town did not follow through after the Halpers took steps to enter the farmland preservation program and the council endorsed the family's application.
Electronics "We really trusted and believed the family when they stated that they had absolutely no interest in developing the land. Clearly, it's all about money and developing the property and squeezing every dollar they can from wherever they think they can get it," Wahler said.
Canon Mark Halper said his family has championed open space since the family first bought the farm in 1922, continuing to farm while others have sold to developers.
