Conservation Award Winners Honored

The Billfish Foundation The Billfish Foundation (TBF), in conjunction with the United Anglers of Southern California, hosted the Third Annual TBF Pacific Conservation Awards and AFTCO Pacific Tag Flag Awards Dinner on Saturday, January 20, 2001 at the Balboa Bay Club.
Laptop Battery Interest in issues arising from recent efforts by the Pacific Fishery Management Council to develop a fishery management plan for highly migratory species (HMS) sparked attendance at the Dinner where anglers learned details of TBF's campaign to assure that this fishery plan protects billfish and other species from overfishing and longline exploitation. Area angling clubs represented at the dinner included the Balboa Bay Angling Club, Dana Point Angling Club, Marlin Club of San Digo, Southern California Tuna Club, the Avalon Tuna Club, King Harbor Marlin Club, Los Pescadores, Harbour Rod and Reel, and the Pacific Angling Club.
According to the indictment, Jones would steal various IBM and Penguin computer servers from Verisign's warehouse in Virginia and sell them to Johnson. Johnson would then sell the servers to several individuals, who would sometimes place them for sale on eBay. As a result of this scheme, the indictment alleges that Jones and Johnson caused Verisign to lose more than $120, 000 worth of computer equipment. In the indictment, Jones and Johnson are charged in three counts with causing the interstate transportation of stolen property, namely IBM 330 and 335 servers, in violation of 18 U.S.C.
Thinkpad Dr. Russell S. Nelson, the fisheries science expert who is leading TBF's Pacific campaign, provided highlights of progress made thus far and steps remaining before the fishery management plan process will conclude. The primary focus of the campaign is to prevent the development of a pelagic longline fishery in waters off California and to help conservation partners in Mexico resist efforts to expand use of the same gear in their waters. Joint Mexican/United States efforts are necessary to ensure healthy abundance of billfish stocks. Tom Raftican, President of United Anglers of Southern California, a conservation partner of TBF, shared his organization's perspective on the west coast HMS campaign and their work with TBF.

Microsoft This year's perstigious TBF Pacific Group Conservation Award went to the Foundation para la Conservacion de los Picudos A.C. for their work to bring about the revocation of new pelagic longline permits issued a year ago in Mexico and their continuing efforts to bring about positive changes in fisheries management in Mexico. Accepting the award for Julio Berdegue, Fundacion President, and Luis Bulnes, President Emeritus, were Carlos Berdegue and Dick Wilkes.

Laptop Computers The Hugo Cesena Memorial Billfish Conservation Award, which includes a one thousand dollar check, sponsored by Cabo Yachts, Adelanto, CA, was won by Antonio Romero of Cabo, Mexico. Antonio (Tony) was the Cabo Charter Captain who released the most billfish in Cabo during 2000. Stan Broadfoot of Cabo Yachts accepted the award for Tony.
