Richard Gabriel, CoreSense s CEO, found that the Zend Guard allows CoreSense to distribute Web-based software directly to customers, instead of restricting them to using a CoreSense black box server to protect proprietary applications. It is important to protect our software, in the unlikely event that attempts are made to copy or change it. We didn t have such an option before the Zend Guard became available. This enables us to expand our markets very economically while protecting the applications we develop for and distribute to customers, Gabriel noted. The Zend Guard is the only real solution I know of for protecting intellectual property developed in the PHP/Apache architecture environment. And, it s very affordable, Gabriel added. I like that it pre-compiles the source code first to gain speed. Also, it is shell scriptable, so it makes releasing new versions of the software quick and easy. CoreSense uses PHP 4.0.6 on the RedHat Linux 6.2 operating system, and the Apache 1.3.20 Web server. I needed to protect the PHP source code of some projects of mine, and I had just started devising a simple PHP encryption scheme when I was contacted by Zend Technologies and asked to beta-test their Zend Guard, which claimed to provide a much higher protection level.I tested v4.0.2 against two medium-scale projects (for a grand total of ~100 .php files and ~200kB of code), and had no problem whatsoever, either at compile-time or at run-time. Compilation is an extremely smooth process which lends itself to being automated very well, e.g. by a shell script, and indeed leaves no apparent trace of the original text in the compiled files.
