On November 21 and 22, guest artists Sherban Lupu, Allen French and Scott Anderson will give recitals and master classes on the violin, horn and trombone, respectively.

Lupu, accompanied by Jessica Paul, assistant professor of music at Luther College, will give a recital on November 21 at 4 p.m. in the Jenson Recital Hall. On November 22 at 10 a.m., Lupu will give a master class in the Noble Room in Jenson.

French and Anderson will give a recital on November 22 at 2 p.m. in the Jenson Recital Hall. On November 22 at 6 p.m., French will give a master class in the Noble Rehearsal Room, and Anderson will give a master class in the Sperati Rehearsal Room.

These events are open to the public and free of charge.

Lupu

The program for Sherban Lupu's recital includes "Sonata for Piano and Violin in A Major, Op. 30, no. 1" by Ludwig van Beethoven, "Sonata for Violin and Piano" by Leos Janacek, and "Sonata for Violin and Piano in A Major, Op. 13" by Gabriel Faure.

"All three of the pieces are duo pieces, meaning the piano and violin are equally important," said Paul. "The 'Sonata for Violin and Piano' by Janacek has a lot of sound effects. The piano is made to sound like a percussive instrument."

Appearing as a soloist in Europe and the United States, Lupu specializes in the music of his native Romania and Eastern Europe as well as virtuoso romantic repertoire. He is currently a professor of violin at the University of Illinois.

"He is a master artist and an inspiring teacher," said Virginia Strauss, professor of music. "Any musician, regardless of their instrument, will find his recital and master class a rewarding experience."

French and Anderson

Allen French will perform "Concerto a Tre" by Telemann, with Carol Hester, assistant professor of music, on flute, and "Sonata for Horn" by Beethoven.

"A piece that Scott Anderson is doing on the recital has quite an interesting title," said Ben Kirby, professor of music. "It's called 'The DeathZone.' The region above 20,000 feet on mountains, found mostly in South America, is called the DeathZone. The piece depicts the effects of high altitude on the body."

French is an associate professor of horn studies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Before coming to Lincoln, French was principal horn for six years with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra and for one year was a member of the Stuttgart State Theater in Stuttgart, Germany.

Anderson is assistant professor of trombone at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Anderson has been a soloist with the Strategic Air Command Band, the University of Minnesota Symphony Orchestra, and the Iowa State University Symphony Orchestra.
