- Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Peter Pace, U.S. Marine Corps. A heartfelt thanks to all past and future USO entertainers. Thanks so much for coming to entertain us. We ll always remember their selflessness. - A grateful soldier supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom. I recently had to tell our son, who is stationed in Iraq with the 45th that his dad, his best friend, has cancer. It was one of the hardest things I had to do. Thirty minutes later our son Ryan loaded a bus to attend a Toby Keith Concert. Toby Keith is definitely our favorite country artist. Is there a way to get a message to Toby to let him know how he helped heal a deep wound in our sons heart at that moment. Toby Keith loves his troops and does wonders for their moral but he needs to know that he sincerely helped a soldier that day. thinkpad

- Proud Mom to a U.S. Soldier and Proud wife to a disabled Vet. Every USO event here in the Middle East has been outstanding. The USO makes it a little more tolerable for soldiers to live, work and fight for their country when they can see that their country is fighting for them. - A grateful service member supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom. It s great that you guys are here. It really gets lonely up here for weeks at a time. If you could send a comedian any comedian that would be just great. microsoft

- A soldier stationed at the DMZ in Korea I wanted to tell you how much we appreciate the USO show. It was...a shining moment in an otherwise routine cruise for sailors. Each and every sailor I spoke with felt honored to have the entertainers visit the ship and offer their thanks. - Commander Brian Reeve, U.S. Navy, USS Nimitz. laptop computers

USO Center Spotlight USO Puget Sound Area - Sept. 2007 | All Past Center Spotlights |

T he USO tradition is to rovide a touch of home for our service personnel, and that is exactly what you have helped create at the Internet Caf . camera

- RADM William French, Commander, Navy Region Northwest . Since opening in 1966, the USO Puget Sound Area center has provided more than three million service members and their families with morale support, programs, services and the comforts of home. The Seattle-Tacoma (Sea-Tac) and McChord USOs annually service more than 300, 000 troops and their families stationed in the Puget Sound area. networking

The Sea-Tac USO center offers a snack bar, a full nursery, books, sleeping facilities, showers and a lounge area that includes a big-screen TV, X-box games, and Internet access. This summer more than 5, 000 Army ROTC students training at Fort Lewis will be provided with bag lunches from the Sea-Tac USO Center as they transit through the airport. Thanks to a grant from Harrah, the center is currently expanding and modernizing their lounge and food services area. sharp

The USO McChord center, located at McChord Air Force Base, is outfitted with a state-of-the-art lounge, multiple computer stations and a deli, which serves free breakfast, lunch and dinner. The hours of operation for the center fluctuate based on deployment schedules and military operations. USO volunteers at the center stand ready 24 hours a day to send off deploying troops with a kind word, a bite to eat and a USO care package. The United Through Reading program is also offered to troops who visit the McChord USO center. cheap

The USO Puget Sound Area mobile canteen is available to deliver traditional USO services, refreshments and entertainment to troops stationed in remote locations throughout Washington state. It features a large screen TV, movies, video games and snacks. windows

Program/Events: Family Connections Initiative

Connecting service members with their families and loved ones is a heartfelt goal of the USO Puget Sound Area. The center provides a variety of ways to ensure this connection, such as access to the Internet, the United Through Reading program and a new TroopSkoot initiative. Both the Sea-Tac and McChord USO centers provide free Internet access to all service members and their families. In March 2007, a new Internet Caf was opened at the Northwest Liberty Center on NAS Whidbey Island. Through a partnership with the Morale, Welfare and Recreation Department at NAS Whidbey Island, and a generous grant from a USO supporter, the Internet Caf was outfitted with 24 computers and 11 video game stations for interactive competition. monitors

More recently, the McChord USO center began offering the United Through Reading program to deploying troops in the Fort Lewis/McChord AFB complex. Response to this opportunity for lectronic bonding between parent and child using a DVD and book has been overwhelming. Service members can schedule an appointment to record a 30 minute DVD before deploying. The DVD and book are then mailed home to their child. linux

Finally, the USO Puget Sound Area has worked with local technology companies to keep families in touch. The ability to move large audio, video and photo files to loved ones over the Internet can be difficult due to bandwidth and security concerns. By promoting trials of the TroopSkoot technology locally and in cooperation with USO World Headquarters, introduction of this new capability is being facilitated. More information on TroopSkoot including a video clip is available, for viewing now. The Family Connections Initiative is being coordinated by the USO Puget Sound Area President Executive Director. . computer support

We had just returned from two years of living in Germany...We had not spent the holidays with our family for several years. When I found out I had duty, I was particularly disappointed that we wouldn t be able to make the trip home. Thanks to our friends at USO-Metro, we had the best holiday ever! I will never forget it! workstation

USO-Metro has outreach centers in military housing communities at Fort Belvoir and Woodbridge Run in Virginia; Indian Head and Fort Meade in Maryland; and Bellevue Housing in Washington, D.C. A new center is set to open on Fort Myer, Va., in 2008. The outreach centers offer a wide variety of programs geared to the young enlisted families, including community days, holiday programs, youth enrichment programs, teen and movie nights, bingo, child welfare classes and distribution of child safety seats. These centers help instill a sense of community to their residents, who often feel transient. backup

USO-Metro also works very closely with Walter Reed Army Medical Center and the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda to provide entertainment, services, and support for injured service personnel and the medical team that cares for them. They also maintain 25 furnished apartments to house military families in extreme financial or medical crisis. These units are available for up to 60 days at no cost to local military families. information technology

Following September 11, USO-Metro worked with the Pentagon to develop Operation USO Care Package (OUCP), a worldwide program that allows the American public to show their support for the troops in a safe and secure way. The program initially began on a local level, but now through a partnership with USO World Headquarters, OUCP has sent more than 1.2 million packages to troops around the world. routers

Program/Events: Holiday Hotel

The Holiday Hotel program is just one of the many ways in which USO-Metro helps the troops during the holiday season. It provides free lodging, donated by area hotels, for visiting family members of those military personnel who are unable to go home for the holidays. The program, which began in 1986, is a wonderful opportunity for local service members to enjoy the holidays with their families while remaining in the Washington, D.C. area. It provides a touch of home to service members that would normally miss out on the opportunity to see their family due to military obligations. More than 500 room nights are given away each year. This year, USO-Metro Holiday Hotel program will run from Dec. 20-30. E-1 to E-6 are eligible. To learn more about this program, contact USO-Metro.. 180gxp
