A better way Most of the steps listed above, and many other concerns related to server recovery would be eliminated with a solution such as Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery. Backup Exec is a rapid server recovery solution designed for small and mid-sized businesses that is both cost-effective and easy to use. When IT disaster strikes, businesses can quickly restore failed systems in minutes to a specified point in time without taking hours or days to manually rebuild and restore systems. Backup Exec even breaks the barrier of having to recover systems to the identical hardware platform where recovery points were created and eliminates the high costs of having to maintain duplicate hardware solely for the purposes of system recovery in the event of an emergency. Businesses with older hardware environments that fail can restore their systems to newer and more updated hardware. Restoration to new hardware can be accomplished without having to reinstall and reconfigure operating systems, device drivers, applications, and system settings making it quick and easy. Also, the new Backup Exec version 11d provides support in a complete 64-bit environment for businesses that have adopted Microsoft Exchange 2007. Remote system recovery can be achieved with the Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery LightsOut Restore capability. A remote administrator can conduct bare-metal restorations simply by connecting via a secure remotely controlled interface. For example, if a new patch or application causes system corruption, an administrator can perform a bare metal restore without being physically at the server. The system can easily be rolled back to a previous recovery point. Conclusion There are many things that can bring a server down complete hardware failure is a common culprit. Small and mid-sized businesses are never 100% immune to the possibility of a server crash, and when it happens it seems like there is never enough time or staff resources to deal with the problem. Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery is a solution that will help keep your business running, even if the server fails, without skipping a beat.

Serving Up Security Article Library Related Articles Secure Your Operating System Serving Up Security September 11, 2006 Summary Learn what you can do to protect your server environment in your small business. Servers are the workhorse of many small business IT systems. A server is a computer that processes requests for data such as email, file transfers, web documents, and services from the client computers that are connected to it through a network. There are several different types of servers, including application servers, database servers, file servers, and web servers. Since servers host valuable information, they are often the targets of threats. Your business email and file servers are vulnerable to viruses, worms, Trojan horses, and DoS (denial f-service) attacks. Also, hackers can shut down or disable a server to prevent a business from running its operations. If your business is a victim of a server security breach, you could lose valuable time and money since your client machines are dependent on the servers for a variety of purposes, ranging from applications to email. Recommendations Here are some steps you can take to protect your servers:
  • Harden Operating Systems: Each server has an operating system and is therefore vulnerable to security breaches in operating systems. Since most out of the box operating systems are not configured for maximum security by default, it is important that you harden the operating systems you use on your servers. You should remove any unnecessary tools and utilities and update patches to your operating system as fixes to newly discovered security vulnerabilities are offered.

"Computer industry analysts estimate that some 60 percent of all corporate data exists only on desktop and laptop computers, " said Walter Scott, CEO of Acronis. "Incorporating Acronis True Image with New Mexico Software backup server is the ideal solution to capture that corporate data and ensure that it is not lost. While traditional server backups are effective for protecting server data, every company should have a combination of server and workstation backup plans."

According to the indictment, Jones would steal various IBM and Penguin computer servers from Verisign's warehouse in Virginia and sell them to Johnson. Johnson would then sell the servers to several individuals, who would sometimes place them for sale on eBay. As a result of this scheme, the indictment alleges that Jones and Johnson caused Verisign to lose more than $120, 000 worth of computer equipment. In the indictment, Jones and Johnson are charged in three counts with causing the interstate transportation of stolen property, namely IBM 330 and 335 servers, in violation of 18 U.S.C.
