A De-Fence Against Deer

Laptop Battery Along with 2,704 acres, about 1,000 deer and every imaginable indigenous and invasive plant, Duke Farms in Hillsborough has another impressive feature: it's becoming the landscape laboratory of New Jersey.

According to the indictment, Jones would steal various IBM and Penguin computer servers from Verisign's warehouse in Virginia and sell them to Johnson. Johnson would then sell the servers to several individuals, who would sometimes place them for sale on eBay. As a result of this scheme, the indictment alleges that Jones and Johnson caused Verisign to lose more than $120, 000 worth of computer equipment. In the indictment, Jones and Johnson are charged in three counts with causing the interstate transportation of stolen property, namely IBM 330 and 335 servers, in violation of 18 U.S.C.

Thinkpad Gene Huntington, the head of the Duke Farms environmental department, faces some of the same wildlife and gardening headaches as his suburban neighbors and local farmers. But he not only sees more deer and wild weeds than the average property owner, he has more resources to deal with them.

Microsoft The Duke Foundation, which owns the estate and the rest of the late tobacco heiress Doris Duke's properties, is trying to get a handle on its natural and man-made ecologies and is opening the grounds to outside research.

laptop computers is driving strong sales for notebook computers, according to the latest quarterly sales figures from the research firm IDC, which reported a 37% computer sales for the second quarter, compared with a year earlier. In the U.S., laptop sales grew 17.7%, while sales of desktop computers and servers fell 4%. The New York Times ( 10), CNET ( 10)

Laptop Computers The idea, Huntington said, is to come up with practical information that anyone can apply, "whether it's for a park or ... a farm."

Laptop Computer Researchers from Rutgers and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden have begun with a "baseline study" of Duke Farms "because it is such a large tract of land, but it is surrounded by a largely suburban area and has all the same problems of deer and invasive species," said Steven Clemants, vice president for science at the Brooklyn institution.

"Computer industry analysts estimate that some 60 percent of all corporate data exists only on desktop and laptop computers, " said Walter Scott, CEO of Acronis. "Incorporating Acronis True Image with New Mexico Software backup server is the ideal solution to capture that corporate data and ensure that it is not lost. While traditional server backups are effective for protecting server data, every company should have a combination of server and workstation backup plans."

Desktop Computer Rapidly spreading plants such as barberry and a European relative of the buttercup pose problems, but the most obvious of the estate's inhabitants are the deer.

Notebooks "It's been estimated we have a herd of 1,000 deer on the entire property, and 150 in the park (the 700-acre landscaped portion of the estate)," Huntington said. "It's way too many."

Lenovo In keeping with Doris Duke's philosophy, though, the foundation is looking for ways to minimize the effects of deer without killing them.

Hard Drive While she opposed hunting, Duke "was concerned about the deer population on the estate," said Anthony McCracken, Somerset County's agricultural planner.

Travelstar Over the years, deer damage has been a sore point among New Jersey farmers. In a 1998 survey of 2,000 farmers, the Wildlife Damage Control Center at Rutgers' Cook College found deer caused between $5 million and $10 million in annual crop losses, said Hope Gruzlovic, spokeswoman for the state agriculture department.

Gateway Duke Farms has several projects in progress or in the planning stage to learn more about deer and their effects on the landscape, said spokeswoman Karen Kessler.

Laptop Parts One practical solution for lessening deer damage to trees may be cedar fencing.

Software "We were doing some landscape studies and I had observed a pile of splintered cedar planks, probably from an old fence post," Huntington said.

Hard Drives The wood had been rubbed to shreds by bucks polishing their antlers, which they do to remove the "velvet" covering when antler growth is complete.

Electronics "The wood had been aggressively rubbed by bucks during the rut season," a problem commonly observed in orchards, nurseries, corporate campuses and even back yards, Huntington said.

Canon Those shattered cedar posts led to the idea of giving deer a choice, Kessler said. The "buck rub" study involves various types of fence posts erected around the property, she said. While data is still being compiled, preliminary results indicate Huntington is on to something, she said.

Desktop Pc Deer "like to rub against cedar because they love its scent," Kessler said. "So it seems that they'll rub the cedar posts instead of against trees."

Desktop Computers If the results observed so far hold up, the information could be distributed through the agricultural extension service, according to Duke Farms officials. Eventually, this and future research likely could be published in scientific journals, they said.
