Backup Plans Worked, With A Few Blips

Laptop Battery Backup generators, the understudies of the electrical world, stole the show when the star took ill. The diesel-fueled backups kept supermarket ice cream frozen and hospital ventilators whirring. They kept the lights on at police stations and protected dangerous lab specimens.

"Computer industry analysts estimate that some 60 percent of all corporate data exists only on desktop and laptop computers, " said Walter Scott, CEO of Acronis. "Incorporating Acronis True Image with New Mexico Software backup server is the ideal solution to capture that corporate data and ensure that it is not lost. While traditional server backups are effective for protecting server data, every company should have a combination of server and workstation backup plans."

Thinkpad These generators are an example of what went right in New Jersey after the greatest power disruption in American history. Experts at hospitals, police departments and state offices have started reviewing the state's response. Most everything worked as planned, but a few problems showed areas of weakness:

I have used Ghost 2003 for my backups but always had problems with some of my 8 (!) computers. A few days ago I bought a Maxtor 80 Gb ext USB 1. 2.0 hard drive. After wrestling for hours with downloads from Ghost and installing extra drivers from Ghost I finally got it to work on one computer. (Ghost works ok here most of the time, drive but last week one of my laptops lost the HD and of course the Ghost backup).

Microsoft # Several of the 24 hospitals that switched to backup power had problems with their generators, although none of the hospitals ever lost power.

Laptop Computers # Busy intersections brought hundreds of vehicles heading toward each other like bumper cars at an amusement park. Drivers found few backup plans to help them navigate congested roads that had no traffic lights.

Laptop Computer # Transportation officials will seek longer-lasting backup to power safety equipment at railway crossings.

Open File Manager is automatically configured to work with applications across the network. Therefore if you have a server computer running a backup software, and you would like to backup a client computer, all you'd need to do is install Open File Manager onto the client computer. No configuration is needed! Was this information helpful

Desktop Computer # The Department of Health and Senior Services said the system used to e-mail hospitals failed because the server was in a town that lost power.

Notebooks Hospitals around the state are now conducting "debriefing" sessions to evaluate how well they handled the blackout. Clifton Lacy, state health commissioner, said no hospitalized patient was injured or killed because of the power failure. He called the response well-coordinated.

Lenovo "Planning and training and exercising is the key," he said. "I have to rack my head to find any real problems."

Hard Drive University Hospital in Newark had to fix a pump before its backup generator could be refueled, according to Terry Pollin, executive director of operations at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, which is affiliated with the hospital. Two other generators provide backup for the university's medical school. One of those generators had a small fire that was quickly extinguished, Pollin said. The hospital had a new generator rushed there Thursday as a precaution.

Travelstar "The system worked fantastic but with just a little bit of a problem," Pollin said. He said the generators are tested regularly but are 20 years old. He will recommend "possibly buying new generators." He said another backup generator works just to protect specimens in the bioterrorism laboratory.

Gateway Transportation Commissioner Jack Lettiere said alternate power for traffic lights could be investigated.

Laptop Parts "That's an interesting idea; it might be worth looking into," he said. Lettiere said providing a backup power source for traffic lights would be complicated, however, because the power hookups are underground.

Software He also said NJ Transit will seek a better way to provide emergency power to safety equipment at railroad crossings. Right now, when the electricity goes off, the agency uses batteries to power the lights, bells and guardrails. But the batteries last only 10 hours.

Hard Drives "We've got to figure out if there's some way to hook up generators to do it," Lettiere said. The Department of Transportation, for example, has backup generators at various drawbridges around the state.

Electronics The state Health Department found the e-mail network used to contact hospitals went down Thursday because the server was in an area without power. Lacy said the state will speed up plans to create a second server in another part of the state. The health department radio network performed well.

Canon In Essex County, Executive Joseph DiVincenzo said the elevator in the main jail did not work, and while the county hospital in Cedar Grove had backup generators, the antiquated facility had just partial light and no air conditioning.

Desktop Pc Michael Caggiano, an expert on the electrical grid who teaches at Rutgers University, said the real finger-pointing should be directed at the electrical grid that failed.

Desktop Computers "We have to find the root cause of what happened and come up with a solution so this will not happen again," he said.
