Notebooks Hospitals around the state are now conducting "debriefing" sessions to evaluate how well they handled the blackout. Clifton Lacy, state health commissioner, said no hospitalized patient was injured or killed because of the power failure. He called the response well-coordinated.

Hard Drive University Hospital in Newark had to fix a pump before its backup generator could be refueled, according to Terry Pollin, executive director of operations at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, which is affiliated with the hospital. Two other generators provide backup for the university's medical school. One of those generators had a small fire that was quickly extinguished, Pollin said. The hospital had a new generator rushed there Thursday as a precaution.
Travelstar "The system worked fantastic but with just a little bit of a problem," Pollin said. He said the generators are tested regularly but are 20 years old. He will recommend "possibly buying new generators." He said another backup generator works just to protect specimens in the bioterrorism laboratory.
Gateway Transportation Commissioner Jack Lettiere said alternate power for traffic lights could be investigated.
Laptop Parts "That's an interesting idea; it might be worth looking into," he said. Lettiere said providing a backup power source for traffic lights would be complicated, however, because the power hookups are underground.
Software He also said NJ Transit will seek a better way to provide emergency power to safety equipment at railroad crossings. Right now, when the electricity goes off, the agency uses batteries to power the lights, bells and guardrails. But the batteries last only 10 hours.
Hard Drives "We've got to figure out if there's some way to hook up generators to do it," Lettiere said. The Department of Transportation, for example, has backup generators at various drawbridges around the state.
Electronics The state Health Department found the e-mail network used to contact hospitals went down Thursday because the server was in an area without power. Lacy said the state will speed up plans to create a second server in another part of the state. The health department radio network performed well.
Canon In Essex County, Executive Joseph DiVincenzo said the elevator in the main jail did not work, and while the county hospital in Cedar Grove had backup generators, the antiquated facility had just partial light and no air conditioning.
Desktop Pc Michael Caggiano, an expert on the electrical grid who teaches at Rutgers University, said the real finger-pointing should be directed at the electrical grid that failed.
