Laptop Computers April 6, 2005 (AXcess News) Topeka - Kansas voters approved a ban on gay marriage and civil unions in their state's constitution by a 70 percent margin Tuesday. Opponents argue that legal battles will ensue.104 of 105 counties votes have been counted so far, with a vast majority of Kansans voting for the ban on gay marriage. Which affirmed the state's stance on marriage being only between a man and a woman. That means that civil unions cannot legally apply for the same rights and privileges of married couples under the constitution.The vote count was 414,235 for the ban, or 70 percent and 178,167 against the ban, or 29 percent.Kansas now joins the ranks of 13 states who have voted to ban gay marriage within their states constitution, including Oklahoma and Missouri. Three other states, Alabama, Tennessee and South Dakota, have slated similar proposals that are on the ballot for next year.Opponents argue that those states constitutional bans affect legal issues such as living wills, custody agreements and power of attorney, said Matt Foreman, executive director of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force.

Laptop Computer Forman's gay activist organization suggested that legal battles could develop in Kansas over the constitutional ban. So far, those states that have enacted bans on gay marriage, that defined marriage as between a man and woman, have stood pat to defend any legal actions that opponents have threatened to pursue.
4. Nebraska's Gay Marriage Ban When Nebraska introduced an amendment that banned gay marriage, supporters of gay marriage fought to have the amendment revoked. The amendment bans legal recognition of same sex relationships including domestic partnerships, and struck out the other basic protections that groups had managed to win for gay couples. One group who lost an appeal of the move against gay marriage may still take the appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court, but others argue that doing so, and making a federal issue out of Nebraska 's ban, could harm the appeals that are being mounted against laws in other states.
