Microsoft James P. Evans was named president and CEO of Best Western International in October 1998, the seventh to hold that position since the lodging chain was founded in 1946.
Prior to Best Western, Evans held several management positions in the hospitality industry including marketing, sales and senior corporate staff positions. Most recently, he served as senior vice president of Operations for the Promus Hotel Corporation, Memphis, Tenn., and before that, as executive vice president of Operations for Doubletree Hotel Corporation.
From 1975 to 1996, he was with the Hyatt organization, rising from director of Sales and Marketing at the Hyatt Regency in Cambridge, Mass., to senior vice president of Sales and Marketing for Hyatt Hotels & Resorts. He also spent three years with the Sheraton Corporation as director of sales at properties in Kansas City, Mo. and Northbrook, Ill.
Under Evans leadership, Best Western has reinforced its global dominance as the worlds largest lodging chain.
A visionary with a clear, focused strategic plan, Evans has led Best Western towards a series of brand refinements. These include building stronger member relations and services, delivering consistency in product offerings, improving customer service and building a team of professionals dedicated to delivering measurable results. He also led the development of a new national advertising campaign, the largest in the companys history aimed at capturing new guests, enhancing brand identity and strengthening loyalty.
Under his leadership, Best Western has made inroads into new international markets including Asia where the company recently opened the first Best Western in Hong Kong.
Evans is active in a number of professional organizations. He currently serves as Vice-Chairman of the CEO Council for the American Hotel and Lodging Association In addition, he has served on the boards of both the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) and the Professional Convention Management Association. In 1996, Evans was named chairman of the ASAE Foundation, the first non-association executive to hold that position.
Evans was most recently recognized as among the 25 Most Influential Executives in the Retail Travel Industry in February, 2001 by Leisure Travel News magazine. In addition, Travel Agent magazine named him to the Hotel Winners Circle for Person of the Year in 2000.
In 1991, Business Travel News tapped him as one of the 25 Most Influential Executives in the Travel Industry. While at Hyatt, Evans was named both General Manager of the Year and Sales Director of the Year.
A native of Mattoon, Ill., Evans holds a Bachelor of Science degree in business from Eastern Illinois University, Charleston, Ill.
