State of the Handheld Industry: Dev. Roundtable
Laptop Battery Do you think Nintendo DS is Nintendo's new direction or just a device to test new ideas?
Mike Merren of Climax: There really just isn't enough information about the device to give a good answer to this. Publisher buy in will determine a lot about what Nintendo do with this unit.
James Daniels of Apex Designs: From what I've see so far it looks more like an experiment than a Nintendo's new direction.
Karthik Bala of Vicarious Visions: It's hard to say right now. There's very little information out there, and I'm sure the information isn't complete. There are likely other key features of the device not yet revealed that would help better answer your question.
As Nintendo has stated, this isn't the successor to GBA. They will still keep that as a main part of their future direction. The DS could be an interim product for them - much like the GBC was a bridge between GB and GBA...or it could be a parallel product line to GBA and Gamecube. We'll know more by E3. :)
Mat Hopwood of Pocketeers: The Nintendo DS is probably to test new ideas, but could turn into a new direction if it becomes popular.
Tom Crago of Tantalus: I think we'll have to wait to find out more about it to make a call.
Pierre Dumas of Magic Pockets: I dont know but I usually trust Nintendos handhelds experience.
Vince Valenti of JV Games: I think the Nintendo DS is a way for Nintendo to introduce a new system that is inexpensive to manufacture. They are reusing the GBA screen, the ARM 7, an off the Shelf Arm 9, and possibly the wireless adapter. Up the memory and speed, and you have a powerful new system, that is unique and does not cost too much to manufacture.
Martijn Wenting of Karma Studios: It doesn't look like a serious competitor to the next generation of handheld system. The units design doesn't look very open to 'code-portability' of existing games/designs. If I where Nintendo I would abandon the DS (with its current rumored specs) in favor of a more powerful machine that would be a serious competition to the PSP (both in terms of release-date & technical specifications).
