Dry July Rekindles Drought Concern

Laptop Battery Just when it seemed as though New Jersey was escaping the clutches of a prolonged drought, nearly three weeks of warm, dry weather have again raised concerns over the state's fragile water supply. Reservoir levels, which had plunged below 40 percent of capacity by winter's end before returning to near normal levels by last month, are again beginning to fall.

According to the indictment, Jones would steal various IBM and Penguin computer servers from Verisign's warehouse in Virginia and sell them to Johnson. Johnson would then sell the servers to several individuals, who would sometimes place them for sale on eBay. As a result of this scheme, the indictment alleges that Jones and Johnson caused Verisign to lose more than $120, 000 worth of computer equipment. In the indictment, Jones and Johnson are charged in three counts with causing the interstate transportation of stolen property, namely IBM 330 and 335 servers, in violation of 18 U.S.C.

Thinkpad The combined capacity of the 13 reservoirs monitored by the state Department of Environmental Protection stands at 86.8 percent of capacity, just slightly below the 87.2 percent level they should be at at this time of year.

Microsoft Though reservoirs typically see their levels drop once summer arrives and the peak water-use season begins, the lack of rainfall has state drought officials cautiously eyeing precipitation charts and daily water consumption.

laptop computers is driving strong sales for notebook computers, according to the latest quarterly sales figures from the research firm IDC, which reported a 37% computer sales for the second quarter, compared with a year earlier. In the U.S., laptop sales grew 17.7%, while sales of desktop computers and servers fell 4%. The New York Times ( 10), CNET ( 10)

Laptop Computers "There hasn't been any significant rainfall since June 27, so the concerns about the drought are continuing," DEP spokeswoman Elaine Makatura said.

Laptop Computer "We're watching the situation very carefully and asking people to do their very best to conserve water," said Dennis Hart, the state's drought coordinator.

"Computer industry analysts estimate that some 60 percent of all corporate data exists only on desktop and laptop computers, " said Walter Scott, CEO of Acronis. "Incorporating Acronis True Image with New Mexico Software backup server is the ideal solution to capture that corporate data and ensure that it is not lost. While traditional server backups are effective for protecting server data, every company should have a combination of server and workstation backup plans."

Desktop Computer Hart said daily water consumption is rising with the warmer weather, reaching 500 million gallons a day, compared with 410 gallons at the end of May.

Notebooks But DEP officials said the state is not ready to reinstate restrictions on watering lawns and washing cars that were eased on June 20 after four months of near normal precipitation had raised reservoir levels above 90 percent of capacity for the first time in a year.

Lenovo Another source of concern is the level of ground water, which provides the bulk of the water supply for southern New Jersey.

Hard Drive "We're still seeing record-low stream flows and groundwater levels in southern New Jersey," Hart said, adding that at least one town, Brick, in Ocean County, has imposed its own restrictions on weekend car washing and lawn watering.

Travelstar So far this month, most of New Jersey has received a minuscule amount of rainfall, less than a half inch, which is almost a 2 inches below normal.

Gateway Though scattered thunderstorms are possible every afternoon this week, no appreciable rain is in the forecast until Thursday.

Laptop Parts Halfway through July, the weather has also been warm, with temperatures rising into the 90s on seven days and hitting 100 once. The average temperature this month, 89.4 degrees, is three degrees above normal, said Nancy Figueroa of the National Weather Service.

Software The combination of heat and no rain is taking its toll on lawns that had turned lush green with the rains of spring.

Hard Drives "It's not unusual to go several weeks during the summer with little rain, and you very quickly see the response to that on your lawns and gardens," said state climatologist David Robinson of Rutgers University.

Electronics So far, the state's crops have been holding up well, thanks to the wet spring.

Canon "Today we're doing okay, but we could use a good, soaking rain," said Keith Arnesen of Cook College, the state's assistant climatologist and agricultural meteorologist.

Desktop Pc Arnesen said a couple inches of rain over several days would be preferable to a sudden downpour.

Desktop Computers "But a thunderstorm that produces a couple inches of rain over a two-hour period would be better than nothing at all," he said.

Think Pad Although the DEP allowed washing cars on weekends and watering lawns every other day as of June 20, a statewide drought emergency remains in effect, which Robinson said now appears to be a wise policy.

Repair "It's going to takes months longer to see if this overall pattern of drought is over," Robinson said, explaining there has been below-average rainfall in three quarters of months over the past four years.

Data Recovery Robinson said the summer is the worst time of year to make up a water deficit because usage is higher and reservoirs like the Wanaque and Monksville, two of the principal water sources in northern New Jersey, cannot be replenished by pumping from the Ramapo and Passaic rivers.

Cisco "It's difficult to make up ground during this time of year, so the idea is to use water as carefully as possible," Robinson said. "Hopefully people will be a little more conservative in their use of water."
