Garrett Kurth ('02) led Luther's strong showing among first-year wrestlers. He ended the tournament with a 4-0 record, earning first place finishing in the silver division at 149 and landing the tournament Outstanding Wrestler Award.
Coach Dave Mitchell said, "Seeing our freshmen against other freshmen in the tournament shows me that our freshmen are some of the best in the area. The fact that this is Luther's second year in a row receiving an Outstanding Wrestler Award in the silver division shows we really have some good kids coming in."
Last year's Outstanding Wrestler honoree Ben Barclay ('01) captured Luther's second 1st place finish at 5-0 in the 165 bracket for the gold division.
Also in the gold division, co-captain Jeff Freidhof ('99) received second place at 174 with a 3-1 record. Freidhof returns with All-American honors, MVP status and an Iowa Conference championship under his belt.
"Overall I saw really good things," said Mitchell. "I am very pleased with how we performed. The key now is to develop our skills and to perform consistently at a higher level in the individual weight classes."
According to Mitchell, the competeing line-up will not be complete until after Christmas because a few players have injuries, "After Christmas, we will be able to come out stronger and start to gel more as a team."
The team will travel to Cornell for a dual meet with Cornell and UW-Platteville on Saturday, Nov. 21.
