There Are Just Too Many People... And Dogs

Laptop Battery There are 1,146 black bears, 106,000 resident Canadian geese, 175,000 white tailed deer, 1 plus million dogs, and 8,484,431 people in New Jersey (2000 census). And you tell me there are too many bears, geese and deer? Apparently we can live with dog attacks, but kill everything else?

According to the indictment, Jones would steal various IBM and Penguin computer servers from Verisign's warehouse in Virginia and sell them to Johnson. Johnson would then sell the servers to several individuals, who would sometimes place them for sale on eBay. As a result of this scheme, the indictment alleges that Jones and Johnson caused Verisign to lose more than $120, 000 worth of computer equipment. In the indictment, Jones and Johnson are charged in three counts with causing the interstate transportation of stolen property, namely IBM 330 and 335 servers, in violation of 18 U.S.C.

Laptop Computer Interesting letter recently in a rival publication from Emil Cimorelli, Highland Lakes postmaster, concerning dog attacks, letter carriers, and the population at large. According to Emil, last year there were 3,138 letter carriers on the receiving end of dog fangs; nationwide, there were 4.7 million dog attacks. There are approximately 52.9 million dogs in the U.S. (1997 census), 8.8 percent of which are apparently dangerous to the point of having committed an attack on a human, mostly children and elderly. Presuming a uniform nationwide distribution (the actual rate of incidence in Jersey would be higher), this works out to 63 letter carriers, 94,000 dog attacks, and 1 plus million dogs in New Jersey. Postmaster Cimorelli offers ... simple reminders and helpful tips ... to ... reduce the hazard of dog bite attacks. Aint nobody sayin theres too many dogs, though.

Desktop Computer The next day, The Herald ran an editorial: Canada geese out of control, whining about all the folks who have happened to step in some goose guano (an eminently trivial aspect), and how the geese are polluting water supplies, swimming areas, and spreading disease (matters of real human concern). The editorial concludes But when overpopulation ... threatens our health and lowers our quality of life, something must be done. There are 106,000 resident Canadian geese in New Jersey (2000 census). Many more fly overhead (and presumably drop a bit of goose guano here and there), but it is the resident Canadian goose that is the real headache. The something which must be done, of course, is to kill them. And so, permits authorizing the slaughter of 11,000 of em (either resident or transient dont matter) are being issued, while completely ignoring the cause.

Notebooks Eileen Robertson of Hamburg asked us the time worn question: When will bears start paying taxes? in the Editors Mailbag. She informs us God gave man dominion over animals, not vice versa (way to go God!). I almost hesitate to interject that the same God purportedly mandated Thou shalt not kill. Human beings have killed more things (including people) in Gods name than under any other circumstance. Get a grip. Instead of waiting for some local police to come to your aid, you should learn to protect yourself and yours. Exercise that God-given dominion over animals (not to mention womens equality). Get a proper gun, learn how to use it, and keep it handy. You have a responsibility to protect yourself.

Lenovo I am reminded of the illustrious, ever vigilant effort of the Sparta Police to rescue their local lady in distress; who upon learning of the poor woman having been scared out of her wits by a 600-pound bruin, ran outside and attempted to kill the first bear they came upon (a measly 300-pounder out for a stroll) with a shotgun. A truly futile endeavor; you have to use something with real hitting power. Thats what 0.41 magnum pistols are for. As a result, a really annoyed bear was left wandering around looking for someone or something at which to vent. I wonder if they conduct all their criminal investigations in a similar manner, can you imagine the outcry if they did? There are a mere 1,146 black bears in New Jersey (2001 census). And yes, everyone agrees ... there are too many of them.

Hard Drive Conspicuous by their absence, there have been few deer stories of late, unlike the actual deer, which are ubiquitous. Such usually appear in the fall, as a prelude of the ramp-up to the slaughter we gamely called hunting season when as many as 40,000 white tail deer are harvested. But as with so many other things which walk, crawl, slither, and otherwise habituate our woodlands, almost everybody agrees there are too many of them, too. There are 175,000 deer in New Jersey (2002 estimate) and I personally really hate it when they raid my garden. Whats a body to do? Why, kill them, of course.

Travelstar There are 1,146 black bears, 106,000 resident Canadian geese, 175,000 white tailed deer, 1 plus million dogs, and 8,484,431 people in New Jersey (2000 census). And you tell me there are too many bears, geese and deer? Apparently we can live with dog attacks, but kill everything else? And when The Herald says But when overpopulation ... threatens our health and lowers our quality of life, something must be done, has anybody given thought to there being too many people? I am absolutely struck dumb by the notion that the human response to every inter-species conflict is kill em, yet we tolerate dog attacks, and overlook the human population explosion as if it doesnt exist. Through disastrous planning, mindless social development, interference, and plain ignorance, people have initiated every issue, and the only solution offered in response is to kill everything that offends.
