Those lazy, hazy days of summer are making state Department of Environmental Protection officials nervous. A dry July is making reservoir levels drop again. By winter's end, our water supplies were below 40 percent capacity, and the state imposed drought restrictions. A nice wet spring brought four months of normal rainfall, and water levels returned to near normal, allowing an easing of restrictions on June 20.

Lenovo The drought conference was organized by the nonprofit New Jersey Corporation for Advanced Technology as a brainstorming session. Recommendations from the conference's attendees will be forwarded to DEP officials creating a new Water Supply Master Plan.
Hard Drive The master plan was last updated in 1996 using data compiled in 1992, Campbell said. Most of the 1996 plan's guidelines were not implemented, he said.
Travelstar The combination of climate change and heavy development has stressed the state's water supply. Confusing environmental regulations and a lack of incentives for utilities to reuse wastewater have also contributed to the current drought, the state's second in the past three years, Campbell said.
Gateway State residents can to do their part by changing the attitude that water "is a boundless resource," he said.
