Fujitsu System Based on Sleepycat's Berkeley DB Improves Border Security
Security System Rolled Out to Locations Across the United Kingdom
EMERYVILLE, Calif. and WOKING, England, Feb. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Sleepycat Software, makers of Berkeley DB, the world's most widely used open source developer database, today announced that Berkeley DB Transactional Data Store version 4.3 will be deployed as the database for one of the UK's border security systems. Sleepycat, which opened an office in Europe last year, now has over 30 customers in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
In Europe, companies are rapidly moving to flexible open source solutions like Berkeley DB to quickly build mission-critical systems. Technology analyst firm IDC predicts that Western European organizations will spend $98 million on open source software IT services in 2004, increasing expenditures by 233% over the next four years to $228 million by 2008.
"We rely on Berkeley DB to provide a secure way to store and retrieve sensitive data in distributed locations across the country," said Nigel Gooch, Development Manager at Fujitsu. "We were able to completely integrate Berkeley DB into our application, ensuring highest security, reliability and performance."
"We're pleased that Sleepycat can contribute to the security of the UK's borders," said Adrian Jones, Managing Director of Sleepycat Europe. "Berkeley DB is well suited for this type of application, and Fujitsu has done an outstanding job of using Berkeley DB to build a robust solution that works on diverse hardware in distributed locations around the Country."
In order to reduce total cost of ownership, Fujitsu exploited the self- sufficiency of Berkeley DB to design a system to operate without the expense of database administration. Berkeley DB operates safely inside the Fujitsu application, reducing potential security vulnerabilities and eliminating database administration. The Fujitsu system takes advantage of the lightweight and high performance nature of Berkeley DB to provide frequent information updates to distributed locations.
